Minimalism, decluttering, and organizing all serve the same purpose: making life simple and more enjoyable. I recently read the book, Minimalista, by Shira Gill. In it, she describes getting organized as “one of the greatest acts of self care” stating that it gives you freedom, clarity, and flexibility in your life. One of my favorite quotes from her book states:
In order to help you improve your quality of life in the new year, here are some tips to help you declutter your space and your mind.

Establish a clear goal of what you want your year to look like/feel like.

This can be with measurable goals or specific words. Write them down and display them somewhere you can see them every day. When we have a clear vision of what we want to focus on in our life, and we are consistently reminded of that, then we are able to rid ourselves of those aspects of our life that don't serve that vision.

Make Sleep a Priority

We’ve all heard over and over that getting at least 8 hours of sleep is essential to physical and mental health, yet we all find reasons and excuses for why we aren’t getting that sleep. We live in a society where being busy is considered a virtue. In our own minds we think that if we don’t have several activities going on then we are lazy. Can we all agree that being busy does not equal being of value? I am here to give you all, and myself, permission to slow down! This year, we are going to stop the cycle of always being overtired and run down. We are going to value rest and recognize that our health begins at getting sleep!

Begin a Journal

Get a beautiful notebook. Get a few nice pens. Use them it to write down all of your lists, thoughts, and ideas. It does not have to be structured or scheduled. It is just a way to provide a consistent place to have a brain dump. Remove the clutter from your mind, and put it into your journal. The more you write down, the more concrete your ideas will be, and the more clear headed you will feel.

Meal Plan for 3-4 Weeks at a Time

Sit down one time and make a list of all your favorite meals. (You can even include some you’ve been wanting to try out!) Divide that list into weekly meal plans, preferably 3-4 weekly meal plans. You can reuse these on a loop without getting bored of the food. From there, you can make a long recurring grocery list of the ingredients needed for all these meals, thus, saving you the mental energy of having to make a list from scratch every week.

Take 30 Minutes to Declutter Your Inbox

Delete old emails, sort saved ones into folders, and unsubscribe from all the unnecessary email lists. You’ll be surprised how much that extra junk was weighing on you!

Prepare for Each Day the Night Before

Pack up lunches and snacks, and set out outfits for yourself and your kids. It will make everything smoother and quicker in the mornings when everyone is tired.

Set Aside Time Each Week for Yourself

Take at least 30 minutes to focus on yourself. Grab your favorite coffee from a coffee shop, meditate, take a yoga class, lay in bed with a face mask, take a bubble bath and listen to your favorite music, journal, read, etc. Truly do something that feeds your soul and allows you to check in with yourself. As the saying goes, “you can’t pour from an empty glass.” Give yourself the time and attention that you give others. Not only do you deserve it, but your loved ones deserve a happier you!

Let's make this year a wonderful one where we prioritize ourselves and our time. Making life's everyday tasks simpler and more streamlined, so you can slow down and take time for those things you enjoy. You deserve it!
